War Bride verse Glory to Women
The two poems I choose “War Bride” composed by Nina Murdoch and “Glory to Women” composed by Siegfried Sassoon, these poems are contrast with the use of language, techniques and themes. “War Bride” is how women do not believe that young men should have to go off and fight, while “Glory to Women” is about how women treat men to fight in the war. The poems speak out in different ways. Sassoon’s poem speaks out as a soldier who has experienced sufferings of war, whereas Murdoch’s poem speaks as a women writing down her feelings that she is experiencing about war.
Siegfried Sassoon’s poem “Glory to Women” may only be a 14 line sonnet, the poems content, themes and language conveys a strong when compared to “War Bride”. “Glory to Women” uses very ironic language to convey the message that Sassoon expresses about women during wartime. “Glory to Women” is an anti – women literature, which is displayed through the use of direct language “YOU”.
Although Glory to Women, does not have very many techniques, it is still very effective, through the use of language; harsh and sometimes in disturbing tone demonstrated through line 14 “His face is trodden deeper in mud”.
While “War Bride” is effective in the way that it makes to you think about why young men should go to war and while old men sit at ease and plot. I feel it is not as effective due to the lack and use of language techniques. The most telling phrase of Murdock’s poem is: “I be widowed who was scarce a bride,” here Murdock personalises her cause a hard to refute claim for advocates of war. . I believe if Nina Murdoch
was to use more techniques combined with themes addressed, her poem would have been more effective with the message it was conveying.
Glory to Women uses strong imagery to emphasis the horror of war, whereas “War Bride” does not emphasis the horror war. The use of alliteration in Glory to Women in lines ten and eleven give gruesome pictures of war “Hell’s last horror, Trampling the terrible corpses, Blind with blood”. The aspirate ‘h’ sounds recalls the heavy breath of the soldiers running, the harsher ‘t’ sound represents the crushing of the bones from the deceased bones of their former comrades underfoot, while the plosive ‘b’s almost copies the projection of blood itself.
The contrast of the moods of the poem are similar in way, as both of the poets are angry and accusing people of doing wrong. Sassoon poem is bitter towards the women’s actions to soldiers about war, while Murdoch’s poem is harsh, with a hint of confusion, regarding the fact why do young men have to go and fight and the old men do nothing besides sit at ease and plot.
After reading both the poems, I understood both messages the composers were trying to achieve, however I believe that I understood the message that Sassoon was trying to achieve more, because he was so strongly set against war, which was conveyed through the irony. It also makes the reader thoughtful, because Sassoon’s message in this poem is very stereotypical, stating that all women think in one way, but that was not always true. I think this poem is very effective because it changes its tone, language and techniques between lines, a positive to negative, from speaking of the good opinions women have of war, to how wrong women are in not realizing how terrible war really is.
